I've had this razor for traveling for about 1.5 years. So far its very good even compared to my Norelco 9190XL which is a much expensive razor. The norelco sometimes pulls while the remington cuts really close and even long beard is notpulled. Nice surprise from Remigton as I was quite exceptic about the quality when I got it and now I am keeping it and thinking on replacing the Norelco!!

I finally gave up on my Braun razor when the trimmer broke and I was just not satisfied with the closeness of shaves. I have had the Norelco8245XLD now for about a month and there is no comparison with the Braun, even though the Braun was tops in the Consumers Report a few years ago. Because the Norelco has rotary blades that travel in just one direction they can incorporate complex double blade cutting wheels that first lifts the whisker then cuts it below the skin line providing a closer shave then vibrating foil razors can. The Norelco's three floating heads do an excellent job following the contours of my face. There were whiskers on my neck that the foil razor could never seem to cut and I would occasionally have to cut them with a blade, the Norelco cuts them without a problem.

When I first turned on the razor after fully charging it I thought there was something wrong with it, it was so quite and it sounded like it wasn't up to speed-- not true-- it gave a great shave and the speed was fine, it just sounded so much more quite then the Braun.

Another nice thing about this razor is that you can flip open the shaving head without removing it and wash it with tap water-- no big docking station and expensive cleaning baths.

The razor holds a charge for over two weeks at least, I just recharge it at two week intervals. I would remove one star for not having a low battery light and no travel storage for the charger.

I have owned a number of Norelco shavers over the last 25 years and loved them all -- until this one. First the good -- It shaved OK but the motor ran slow. The bad -- the head tended to fall off during cleaning, there is no indicator to show battery charge status so shaver stops without notice, no space in case for the brush, power cord, instruction book, etc. so the accessories had to be packed in a plastic sandwich bag when I traveled. I've used the shaver for a month but I'm returning it and will look for a model with the features this one is missing. I'm still a Norelco fan but I hope my loyalty is not misplaced.

As with other reviewers I too bought a top of the line Panasonic wet/dry shaver because of the reviews were good. It took me way longer than a blade to get a smooth shave and if I missed a day shaving it would take me another 4 or 5 minutes to get the same shave. I used it in the shower and shaving cream would lubricate it but not that good especially since you have to use many passes to get one spot shaved smooth. I also tried expensive oils to make the blades glide on my face which worked better but I realized I was trying too hard to make this Panasonic work.

I finally got fed up and quit using it. I was thinking about going back to my razor but then I started looking at Norelco shavers. I hesitated on the Coolskin shaver thinking that it was just a gimmick. I checked out the customer reviews and I noticed they were good so I thought I would give it a try. I was very surprised on how well this thing shaves. with the Panasonic you always have to have the blade held at 90 degrees from the surface of your face, the Norelco you just let the floating heads do the work, no thinking at all. I don't use the lotion that they supply you all. The only thing I do is put a layer of regular soap on my face and it works beautifully. I wish Norelco would make a wet shaver that didn't have the lotion dispenser, it doesn't seem like that many people use it. Two other nice things about this shaver is that this is made in Holland not China and they give you a 60 trial period compared to the Panasonic's 30 trial. Get it it's great!

I upgraded from an older version of the cool skin models as it would no longer turn off. I hope I don't have a problem with this one. I like that wet clean shave it gives me so far. I had to return it once for the blades sticking and making an awful noise but amazon did that so fast and without a problem so I am quite impressed.

I like the stand it comes in and the look and feel. I hope to have this one for many years.

I have loved this razor even though within one month the blades had problems and I had to return it. Now in within 7 months I have had the battery die twice when it had at least 75 % battery indicator. One day I am shaving fine and the battery is almost full the next day it is dead and won't respond to anything. I have to let it sit on the battery charger for a long time for it to even recognize it. I wish I could return it and get another battery. I love the shaver but the battery is the worst I have ever dealt with.

I have found that you can buy Nivea shaving gel at any store for about three bucks and use the gel just as you would with a razor blade. It actually works better than the pump Nivea inside the shaver and super cheap. This eliminates the need for the expensive refills. I owned this shaver for awhile, but then I turned to the Mach 3 and eventually the Fusion. Being frustrated with a poor shave, I bought a Braun 360 and then a Norelco 8150XL. None of these options provided a closer or faster shave than the 7735X. This shaver by far gives me the closest shave and in a short amount of time. I originally moved away from this shaver to skip the cost of lotion cartridges and the messy exchanges. However after all of the other shaving methods I've tried, I'll live with the extra cost and the goo.

Unit started making funny, grinding sound... not too bad, but not normal. Then it started to slow down and really did a number on my face, I felt like I had a bad sunburn. I called Remington and this is discontinued, as are all of the Powerclean units. They said they would replace it with a different model.

I picked this up primarily because of the price. I needed to replace the cutters and foil on my Panasonic Linear and it was cheaper to buy the R-1000. At first I thought it was a little harsh on my skin, but I think it's because I was fooled by how quiet it was, I guess I thought I needed to push down harder than I needed to. After using it for 6 months I can now say that it shaves faster, closer and better than the panny. For the $$ this is a very good shaver.

This is the second self-cleaning razor I've owned from Remington, after their first generation model. After 3 years that one wouldn't keep a charge, the mustache trimmer was broken, and the cleaning base had a crack in it. But, 3 years is pretty good on a shaver nowadays, and I was very happy with it while it worked. I was going to switch to Norelco, as I've always liked the looks of their products. But I saw this model on sale and decided to give Remington another go.

This shaver is a definite upgrade in the aesthetics department. It looks like something out of Star Trek. While not as ergonomically designed as some other models and even the older Remingtons, it looks good, especially in the cleaning base. The power button is much improved from the rubber button on the older models, it's plastic so it will never be hard to turn on and won't wear away with use. The power indicator is also very sleek, with colored lights down the side. The comfort selector didn't make much of a difference for me, I tried it on both settings and didn't get any irritation. But, that might be because I've used their shavers for so long. The shave seems standard for an electric even on the closest setting, not too great but not too bad.

The top pops open for washable cleaning without the cleaning base, and it's really easy to do. But, the reason you are getting this model is for the cleaning base, so I'll talk about that. It's improved and regressed a bit from the previous version. A problem with the old one was that to clean the unit you had to plug it in everyday and let the cleaning cycle run for 20 minutes. While it was in the base it was always plugged in. Not letting the shaver use out it's charge is not good for battery life. The R-1000 meanwhile has a charging point that pushes down, and the cleaning cycle only lasts 2 minutes. So when it is done you can pop it back up.

The shorter clean cycle does not necessarily mean it's not cleaning as well as the older one. The old one would run the shaver with fluid for a minute, let it sit for a minute, then run for a minute without fluid to get it out of the shaver, and then it would fan dry for 15 minutes. This new one runs with fluid for a minute and then without for another minute. It has no fan, and therefore just airdries after. I've only had it a day, so I can't speak to the paint peeling issues spoken about in other reviews, but it seems like that might be a problem due to this. I used their old model on the clean cycle everyday for 3 years and never had any peeling issues. I'll update the review with comments as I experience any problems.

It also comes with a travel bag and a cord that can plug directly into the shaver. The replacement filter and solution can be bought at Wal-Mart and Target for 5 bucks. It usually lasts about a month if run everyday. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, it's a good shaver in look and functionality.

UPDATE: After about 3 months of use, the paint is indeed peeling off the top of the shaver and the sides due to the cleaning solution. While a good shaver in function, this horrible decision by the company to use paint susceptible to this type of problem is pretty inexcusable. Probably why their new line of shavers that came out last month doesn't include a self-cleaning model. I would change my score to 1 or 2 stars, but it won't let me. I'd avoid this shaver due to this pretty big issue.

Owned the Remington system for 6 months and although the shave was fairly good (hence the two stars), the razor itself fell apart. The paint on the plastic does chip away, which doesn't sound like a big deal but you end up with small flecks of paint on your skin that are hard to get off. The cleaning system was quick and easy to keep up, but I don't think it is the best on the market. I ended up opening my wallet to purchase the Braun Pulsonic system and I am not looking back. That is one incredible shave and cleaning system. Good luck in whatever you choose but this is not the system that I would recommend to a friend.

Always been a loyal Norelco fan. This product disappoints. I've used this shaving system for over a year. (too expensive to throw away). Every day I use it, I get disappointed, I have to shave the same area of my face over & over again to get a clean shave. The previous Norelco shavers I had were much better. The cleaning & charging device stopped working 6 months ago. Just waiting for the shaver to go so that I can buy another shaver..... NOT NORELCO.

I am giving this 3 stars although mine is broken. Let me tell you about the good first. The cleaning system is pretty cool, and works well. I just wish the liquid didn't evaporate so quickly. But it being part alcohol - that makes sense that it evaporates. The shave is close, although rough on the skin. The head doesn't move as smoothly along my face as my old norelco. Another positive is that is uses the same recharging cable as my old norelco (I think all norelco chargers are the same).

Now the bad. At home, this razor was perfect. It has about 80 minutes of juice in it and i only need to charge it about once every 3 months, since I have a secondary norelco I keep in my gym bag and use that one when I'm at work. My secondary battery finally wouldn't hold a charge, so I had to replace it with my new 9170XLCC. Well, every time I would take it out of my gym bag, the head would be popped open. This is because the button to open the head actually sticks out from the body, and anything can snag it and it will spring open. You don't even need to 'press' the button, you just need to touch it. Well, today it was, as usual, popped open. The only difference now is that it won't close. It probably twisted a little while in the open position and now the blades are unaligned with the head, and it won't snap shut. I can get a piece of tape and tape it shut, which works, but that is not the point. Norelco had done a great job before by creating a recessed button on my old razor, but now this button that sticks out can snag on anything. Not only is it bad in the sense that the head can twist when popped open, but I also have little hairs all over the bottom of my bag because it kept popping open.

So that's my review - it worked as a razor, but don't plan on travelling with it. Even when you place it in a glove box/cupholder, that head will manage to pop open. It was a poor design flaw and I'm very disappointed that norelco would send something out like this without any type of travel-testing. I mean, what's the point of a cordless razor if you can't take it anywhere with you?

I purchased the Norelco 9170XLCC in June of 2006. I had 3 warranty claims during the 24 month warranty period for the same problem; the cheap rubber spindle that attaches to the razor heads broke 3 times, each time after exactly 6 months of use, rendering the shaver usless. After the final claim, exactly 6 months later it broke again, this time out of warranty. I Emailed Norelco and their response was to provide various service centers where I could send it and pay for repairs. I refuse to pay for a repair of a product that lasts only 6 months. I gave up and now use a Braun. It is a shame as this was my fourth Norelco shaver and unfortunhately the least durable.

It's a pricey razor yet it keeps coming apart! The hinge used to hold on the head is made out of really bad metal that twists and rusts and the head comes off very easily as a result. I wouldn't trust Norelco ever sice the merge with Phillips. To add insult to injury, the head fell on the floor by accident and it shattered to pieces. I busted out my Gilette fusion and got a much better shave in seconds flat with none of the hassle. Goodbye Norelco and goodbye electric razors.

Great product when it works! I bought this in December and it worked fine for 3 months. After three months it just stopped. I initially went online and got chat support from the philips website. The person on the chat support determined that the razor is defective and told me I would get a replacement piece in 10 business days and provided me with a chat incident number. I was really please till 11 business days later I had not received my replacement and decided to call the philips support line. They were unable to trace my chat incident number and said that it is probably the razor head that was defective and needs to be replaced, however, the razor head is not covered under warranty! Great workmanship and excellent support (NOT)! How is a defective razor the consumer's problem? In conclusion, if anyone does decide to purchase this product, be prepared to forgo your investment if it stops working like mine did!

When I first started using this razor, I was VERY skeptical, being it was my first electric razor. I received it as a Christmas gift and figured it was as good a time as any to stray away from the world of manual razors.

When I first used it, I was scared to say the least. I didn't know how it would feel, perform, or how my skin would react to it. After I finished my first shave with it, I was a bit unsatisfied. It missed a lot of hair, and left my skin feeling irritated. When I went on to review other electric razors I found that it is very common for electric razors to miss hairs, so I gave this product the benefit of the doubt and decided to give it another shot.

My second shave was more enjoyable. I decided to slow my shave down, and give a little more attention to how I was maneuvering the razor. My results the second time around were a little more favorable. It didn't leave behind as many hairs and my skin was less irritated and a lot smoother.

After a few more times of use, I decided to break down my shave a little more and read the instructions that came with the razor. Turns out, reading the instructions and following them make a HUGE difference. Who would've thought?

After about the first month of use, it became clear that keeping this razor was the best decision I've made in a long time. Now that I have a personalized shaving system down, not only is my shave quick and close, but it's also enjoyable.

This razor cuts close. And I mean CLOSE. And with little to no irritation depending on how hard you press. Sometimes it's hard to gauge how easily certain spots on your face get irritated, so some irritation is just inevitable. The floating heads contour to everything nice and fluently. Philips Norelco advises the consumer to not buy any lotions or cremes to put on your face because it could possibly damage the razor. But I found that I actually get a better shave if I use the dispensing moisturizer in unison with a good face wash, and I can't imagine it doing any harm to the razor. It's never caused me any problems.

All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this razor to anyone and everyone. It's a great razor for first time electric razor users as well as long time veterans. It also shaves just as well as the Braun Pulsonic Series 7 (I should know, I've used the Braun as well, thanks to my roommate) if used correctly, and at half the price! Do your research, give yourself some time to form a shaving routine, and give this razor a chance. You won't regret it.

I bought this shaver to replace a previous cool skin model that had lasted 3 years and then became unreliable. Sometimes, when you hit the power button, it wouldn't turn on, even with a freshly charged battery. I always liked the rotary shaving system, so I stuck with Norelco and purchased this unit. Now, after just one year, I'm having the same problem as I had with the previous model. If I'm going to pay over $100 for a shaver, I want the thing to last more than a year. I have a little travel shaver that runs on AA batteries as a back-up that I bought at Wal Mart for $10 about 7 years ago. It still works every time, but I can't shave in the shower with it. I haven't had much luck with foil shavers, but I've decided to try a Panasonic ES8234A Arc IV Nano based on customer reviews.

I bought this razor at a filene's near my home and without having read any of these reviews online. I still keep it as a back-up for when I lose my regular razor. It does work but it's not ideal for everyday maintnance. It will not easily trim morning stubble but it will work on hairs long enough to wax. You can use it for shorter stubble but it'll take you a few passes. It'll trim hairs short enough to feel but not see.

For me, as an emergency-only option, it's been worth the cost.

The shaving guard thing in the middle got all warped from trying to take it off for cleaning and the blades on the top and bottom end serve NO purpose! It was like the shaver didn't shave any hair at all;not even close to a smooth shave! I was very dissapointed in Norelco and tossed this shaver into the trash can. I have very sensitive skin and shaving with a razor is painful, so I can only do it once a week. I saw a commercial for this razor and was leary, but I did some research and read some good reviews. I purchased the razor hoping that it would allow me to ditch the painful razor. Oh, I was so wrong! Please, don't buy this razor. It does not give a close shave at all! You have to go over spots over and over and still nothing happens. So, by the time you get done, your legs will still be hairy and they will be all red. It leaves stubble 1/8 of an inch long which totally looks like you haven't shaved. You can't wear shorts, swimsuits, nothing. Plus, the battery dies all time when I am in the middle of shaving, even though I charge it properly. If you are looking for a decent shave, this product will not help you.

This is my 2nd Norelco and I am satisfied with it. My previous Norelco was a 2 row blade system which I had bought in 2001 used for 6 years. There was nothing wrong with my old shaver, but I thought this shaver would be a substantial improvement over the 2 blade system.

The good news is that this shaver is overall better than the older 2 blade system. The most significant improvement is the battery life. This shaver uses Lithium Ion batteries which lasts me about 2 months with a single charge (my old shaver lasted about 3 weeks). When you travel, chances are you will not need the recharger.

The bad news is that the shave, which the 2 blade system did beautifully, is not substantially improved over the 2 blade system. This is not necessarily bad since the 2 blade system was a very good shaver.

I had Norelco razors before that shaved well that used the lift and cut blades. With those razors you were supposed to shave with a rotating motion. With this razor if you shave with a rotating motion it pulls the whiskers out and it is very painful. You have to shave with and up and down motion, but you have to be very careful or it will still pull the whiskers out. This Speed XL shaver is much more expensive and does a bad job.

I know it says "Men's" on there, but I am a woman, and I use this razor. I just happen to have very coarse hair on my legs. Lady shavers don't do it for me. In fact, I've always had to use 2 razors, a men's for the legs and a women's for the underarms. I know, more information than you wanted, but it's relevant.

This razor is the only one I have ever had that works for everything. Oh, I had some really nasty razor burn before I got the hang of it, but since then, it's been great! No cleaning and maintaining 2 razors any more.

I have found with this razor, that putting pressure on it is a big no-no. If I do that, it will tear up my skin big time. I have to just sort of guide/glide it over the area, no pressure on it, and it does a beautiful job without the razor burn. Now, I honestly don't know how that would go for a guy and his face, but that's how it works for me on ALL parts I shave.

This razor only needs charged about every two to three weeks. There is no indicator system on this razor, and when it needs charged, it just quits. If you keep playing with the on/off button, it will run for 2 or 3 more minutes, but that's it. It takes one hour (about) to recharge, much better than any razor I ever had before.

This razor is easy to clean, just run the head under the sink, shake the water off, and let it dry out. I do that once a week. Easy peasy.

Like I said, I've no idea how my experience might translate for a guy. I gave it 4 stars because of the lack of a recharge indicator. Other that, it is wonderful for me.

I've used this Norelco 9199XL for a month now and ......no surprises. It's still the best electric shaver you can buy. Even the less expensive Norelco shavers are the best no "frills" no nonsense and quietest electric shavers on the market.

Personally I enjoy some of the "frills". The usage by the minute and time remaining before charging, the adjustable "sensitive skin" shaving level makes a noticeable difference for me, the triple "floating head" system not only provides a smoother shave (smooth as a blade in my opinion) but a faster shave as well, and of course the time saving and efficient "rinse clean" feature for easier maintenance. The large multi-level case that store the shaver, charger and hard shell compact travel case along with numerous other goodies (including a collector 1/32 race car)are a bit over done and expensive. All very impressive for the special gift/collector kind of person. It's all in how much the "ultimate" is worth to you.

I purchased this item as a gift for my father. The pricetag was high and I debated for a while but ultimately took the plunge. And I think it was worth it.

I guess when re-reading the description it does explain the product pretty well but what I somehow missed is that these are limited editions and I think Philips is a Formula 1 sponsor so the appreciation on this as a collectible could be pretty intense. There are 200 units in existance and they're numbered. They also have a certificate of authenticity.

The case itself has 3 levels. The top folds down to reveal a mini-DVD, the instruction manual, a USB adapter/converter of some sort (not sure what exactly it does - dad can figure that out on his own) and a brush for cleaning the shaver.

The main level is covered by a black dust cloth. Under the cloth is the shaver in it's stand (a unique black, white and silver smart-touch. I have the 9170XLCC with the clean and charge base model actually - this one is a little sleeker/cooler looking), a flash drive that I think has a message from Williams on it but I haven't listened as this is a gift, a carbon fiber travel case for the shaver, and a miniature formula one racing car, which is highly collectible I believe.

That tray lifts out to reveal the bottom of the case and a half-tray. The half-tray holds the plastic travel cover for the shaver and the Power cord. The bottom of the container itself holds the auth certificate.

I was already pondering purchasing an electric shaver for my dad and he's a Formula 1 fan so when I found this I got pretty excited. Well worth the price when you see it in person. The presentation is flawless and makes a truly incredible gift I think.

It shaves my whiskers cleanly every morning, year after year, without irritating my leathery hide. It trims my sideburns precisely. It holds a charge for long enough to carry it on a camping trip for a week. It has never needed any maintenance aside from shaking out the DNA-rich stubble. It was a gift from my wife, not for a birthday but to replace a well-beloved Braun that got dropped once too often.

The Braun was lighter and shaved a micro-bristle closer, but the model is no longer made. That's why I give this Norelco only four stars. "After the first electric shaver, there is no other." I have the same feeling about cameras and dogs.

Notice that this is a "corded" shaver. I have it for about an year now but when I was trying to clean it today, it suddenly pop out all the parts and now I'm having big trouble to putting it back. I think next time I will just buy a slightly better model instead of this one. It is made in China and the build quality is just so so. After years of buying high end Norelco cordless shavers--most of which are now made in China--and rarely using them in cordless mode, I decided to try this shaver. I have a medium thick beard, and its Reflux Plus heads deliver a shave nearly as close as the much more expensive Norelcos. Manual cleaning on a weekly basis is sufficient, and simple to perform.

One quality issue: the cord's female end does not fit on the prongs as securely as one would like, and occasionally detaches during shaving. Overall, however, this is a very good shaver and delivers very good value.

It is so nice to not have to keep track of a bunch of attachments, it really cuts down on the junk around the house. I wish they made an all metal, corded model with this kind of length adjustment.

I've used this razor for about two years and I'm pleased overall. It gives a pretty close shave. For comparison, I've used Braun razors before this for many years. For the money, this is a good razor. Other reviewers mention that it is hard to clean the cutters; true. But popping off the head for just a daily 'emptying' is not problematic. I would say it's one of the best 'value' razors. Four stars for that category.

Edit:

I failed to mention: the battery lasts for 3-4 shaves; fully charges in about 2-3 hrs. The replacement heads can be pricey; from $23 - $30.

I reiterate, good shaver if bought for around $35. It is only lacking if compared to high-end shavers.

I received this strange-looking, praying mantis like device on Monday after ordering it the previous Saturday (thanks to Amazon Prime shipping!). I travel quite a bit for work, and I like to pack as lightly as possible so the Braun Pulsonic usually stays at home. I have three different battery-operated Braun travel shavers that were made over the last 15-20 years, but I'm not completely happy with any of them. The latest PocketGo P-70 isn't bad--it actually might do my neck a tiny bit better than my Pulsonic--but I don't like using it for a full shave because it takes forever and doesn't do a very good job on my cheeks.

A few months ago I saw this Philips Norelco HQ40 battery shaver on Amazon and decided to give it a try. Man, I'm impressed! The little $20 Philips gives a great, close shave in a reasonable amount of time. As a bonus it is easier to clean with the little brush they give you than my PocketGo is. Since my last trip, I've started using the HQ40 at home on occasion, since I'm starting to think it gives me a better shave than my pricey Pulsonic.

My only niggle is I'd like a more secure fitting travel cap, or maybe a pouch, but the shaver itself is fine. Also, the Braun PocketGo can be used wet, where this Philips Norelco is dry use only. Battery life has been very good. I've probably shaved at least 15 times with it and I'm still using the set of Philips alkaline AAs that came with it.

I hate shaving. I loathe it. It may be the worst part of being an adult male (which is, you know, not such a bad thing but still...) and I am fortunate that I really only have to shave a couple of times a week for work and such.

After reading the reviews here about a year ago, I went for it and bought the CoolSkin.

I decided that I would follow the instructions to the letter for the first couple of weeks. I shaved every day (horrible!!!) and then after about 10 days, something 'clicked' and it became an actual pleasure to shave.

It takes longer than using a conventional razor, but when you're finished, your face is smooth from the moisturizer and you have no more whiskers. Yay!

If you "let yourself go" for a bit and have longer whiskers, don't worry, it will still work. Don't hold the razor at the ends of the whiskers or it will simply PULL THE BEARD OUT OF YOUR FACE and no one except for a small yet vocal type of person wants that sort of pain in their life. Instead, begin shaving at the edge of the "beardline" and use slow, deliberate circles and you will achieve a nice, smooth, comfy shave.

Make sure you rinse the blades

it's a very good shaver, but i expected a closer shave... it's really hard to shave under the jaw and it's really anoying to have to pump the gel... but on the bright side, it's really great for people with sensitive skin because there's hardly any irritation, also the battery lasts for over two weeks (and i have to say i use it every day and sometimes twice a day...). all in all i do recommend it and i think it was a good purchase..

My only other experience with electric razors has been with the Braun 1775 and I believe this is definitely a better shave.

PROS: Great close shave, love the norelco shaving gel/lotion, it's quieter than my Braun 1775, and the 3 pivoting heads are perfect for where your neck/chin curves.

CONS: Shaving in the shower doesnt give you as close of a shave, it supposedly takes 8 hours to charge and charge only lasts 40min, and you can't shave while it's plugged into the wall.

Even with the cons, it's a great razor, especially for the price. Buy it!

Just wanted to let you know that although I ordered this exact item off amazon, and it came in the exact box pictured with a picture of a blue cord, the cord is actually black, not blue.

This was a plus for me - I though a blue cord would look kind of funny in the car, whereas a black would look nicer. So when it turned out to be black it was certainly a plus.

I bought this to replace a Norelco Cool Skin shaver. I had the Cool Skin for 2 years and loved it, but the battery wore out.

The Speed XL 7800XLCC is a waste of money. There is no "Speed" in this thing at all. The motor is weak, the charge does not last for more than one shave.

It takes a half hour to shave, and the shave still sucks. The heads barely cut.

I am going to send his back to Norelco.

I don't know what I will try next. I liked the Cool Skin, but the lotion dispenser is fragile, and I'd rather have a pop up trimmer.

"A Great Shaver -- poor peripheral design" 2009-10-16

I have been using Norelco Shavers for over 20 years. I like the way they shave, I like how quiet they are and they are easy to maintain. The 8260 continues the tradition with an incremental improvement in the shave mainly due to the articulating head. Having said that, Norelco should either stop adding "stuff" as peripherals or pay attention their details like they do the shaver. The cleaning system actually cleans it very well; the problem as pointed out by other reviewers is that you are not supposed to leave the shaver charging. You are supposed to let it run low and then recharge to save the battery. Guess what? The cleaning cycle is long ~ 1 hour or so. In the cleaning cycle it charges and I certainly can't wait around to unplug (or flip a lever that disconnects the power to the shaver) it after the cleaning cycle. It couldn't be hard to design the cleaner to not charge the shaver "automagically" except when the user wishes. It is like the two items, the shaver and the cleaner were designed by two different teams that didn't talk to each other. It is truly an astounding design oversight. I'm not sure if there is a version of the shaver without the cleaner. The cleaner isn't really necessary and it does take up lots of counter space, it consumes expensive cleaning agent, and takes a plug (a rare commodity in my bathroom). I give it four stars because it shaves well and subtract two stars for the stupid cleaner design but add one back for the travel power off system that locks the power button so it won't turn on in your luggage. I hope Philips reads these reviews and takes note of them -- it boggles the mind that the design is so flawed from a company that does so many things so well.

In addition to a high quality razor, I bought this model for the recharging stand that is shown in the picture of the product. I was very disappointed that, after tearing through in the insane packaging, there is no charging stand. There is, however, a huge cleaning system--but the cleaning system doesn't do anything for charging and requires juggling the wires around. Not something I want to do on a regular basis. The shave itself is very close--by far the best I've had with any electric and I've tried at least a dozen of them over the years. So I'd recommend this or one of the similar models, but don't buy this for the recharging station that isn't included!

I've been a blade guy all my life til now.

The problem with blades these days is due to my lifestyle change; that is, I work from home now.

So, consequently I don't shave every day. I shave when I need to be presentable, but if I'm going to home

depot or something, I don't bother. But, that has created a big problem for me with the multi-blade

manual shavers. The longer beard stubble clogs up the blades in a few shaves. Even though the blades are not dull,

I have to throw them out because I can't get the stubble from between the multiple blades even by running

both hot and cold water at max pressure.

So without even looking at reviews (which is not like me), I went to Walmart and bought the Norelco 8260XLOCC.

I was really surprised at what a nice shave it is, although it takes a little getting used to. I did not rate it 5 stars though for one of the same reason other reviewers did not; that is that it cannot be stored continuously in the cleaning holder plugged in. If the shave weren't so darn good, I'd give it a 2 star because I don't like the idea of having to plug and unplug this thing all the time.

I like how the cleaning cradle works though, but I agree with others that it's too expensive to purchase that cleaning solution at the rate they require. So, I'm going to do the same as the other reader who rinses in hot water most of the time, but every so often uses the cleaning solution. At least Norelco offers the ability to rinse with hot water. I have not dumped the solution yet, but if it's full of stubble, I might consider straining the stubble with a fine screen and reusing; depending on how it looks. I might also do what the other reviewer did and rinse with hot water before putting in the cleaning solution to reduce the gunk.

I've only owned the shaver for six days, so I can't comment on the battery life or long-term reliability.

Bottom line is that Norelco should have either figured a way to allow me to leave the shaver in the cradle plugged in full time without damaging the batteries, or there should be a charging switch on that cradle. Since I've heard the battery life is very good, the switch idea would have been what Norelco SHOULD have done...particularly for $150. I wish that were so.

I have owned 2 other Norelco XLs and have been very satisfied. I bought this one because I thought it was time for a change after about 7-8 years. I looked at the reviews for the Brauns and although they mostly looked good, I decided that I would stick with the rotary head razor. I was amazed that it was much better than my current Norelco. The heads have been improved tremendously. The razor is very quiet. I would have liked an LCD for the remaining charge as in my old razor, but not worth the extra money. The cleaning system is not a deal maker. It takes up too much counter-top space to keep out all the time. You can't leave it in the cleaning system to keep it charged. The replacement cleaning fluid is too expensive. My plan is to rinse the unit in the water weekly and use the cleaning system monthly. I also reuse the cleaning fluid because it does not get too dirty since I rinse the clippings out in running water before using the system.

I am impressed with the charging (or relative lack of) of the unit. I get over 2 weeks of daily shaves on a charge!

I can get a close shave in under 7 minutes. I would describe my beard as average.

Overall, I would definitely by again. Forget the foil cutters.....

I've owned lots of shavers in my lifetime from a Remington I got as a gift as a teen, and two Norelco's, one Braun. I have to say this Norelco Arcitec 1060 is the first electric shaver that works as advertised. I get a razor close shave even in the neck region.

As for cleaning after each use it takes all of 30 seconds under the faucet.

I'M very happy with this purchase and highly recommend this product.

From someone who has been a loyal Philishave customer for more than 10 years, I think this is one of the worst purchase decisions I have made yet. I was taken away with the new space design. I was hesitant because of the price tag, and because I knew a machine this new would be a risk to buy since it hasn't been tested as extensively as earlier models yet.

The worst electric razor shaving experience I have ever had, period. I basically have to keep going over the same spot over and over to get a an 'average' clean shave, it now takes me almost 10 minutes to shave. With earlier, less tech, models it used to take me 2-3 minutes to get the same shave. And if I leave my beard unshaved a few days, with the hairs a tad bit longer at around 2mm, it keeps missing the longer ones and i have to go over them again and again, and probably get into trim mode, trim them, and go back shave them normally when they are shorter! This never happened with earlier (much less expensive) models.

What ticked me off, was how fragile this thing is. Yesterday I wasn't careful enough handling it, it slipped my hand and fell onto the ground. Since it fell on a thick carpet, I thought the fall had been greatly cushioned. However, to my surprise, it is not working as it should anymore. Normal shaving mode makes a very loud noise and shaves even worse than before, and Trim mode does not work at all anymore.

Bottom line: You are better off buying one of the better shaving, more rugged, and least expensive models than this one. But if you're already swept your feet with the "space looking" tech - as I was-, then buy it on your own risk.

Edit: I think this review goes for the whole Arcitec range, since they all are the same at the core.

This shaver gives a good shave but does pull once in awhile. That was he part that disappointed me. Left a good burning sensasion. It is easy to clean and charge. The charging/storage case is pretty cool. I wish there was a place to save the brush so things don't get seperated and a small travel case maybe for it. I like it because it does flow pretty good over your face when shaving and stays pretty smooth.

I have been a Braun shaving customer for over 20 years. I find I'm able to get almost as close as a blade. So, why bother with any other shaver? Well, I'd always been fascinated by the triple-head design that Norelco pioneered back almost 30 years ago. The last time I tried one was about 10 years ago, and I wasn't impressed. With the latest Arcitec design, I figured it was time to give it a try.

The Arcitec Models

Philips Norelco makes so many different models, I can't figure them all out. However, the Arcitec stands out by having a very distinctive slender look, the triple head surface on a flat conical piece that is affixed to a pivot, unlike the "neckless" other models. There are 3 main Arcitec models: 1050, 1060, and 1090. There are also two suffixes: X and CC. I think the 'X' means there is no cleaning station, while 'CC' means a cleaning station IS included. You may see some models shown without either suffix--this is the same as the 'X' (before they changed their naming convention). So, why is there a cleaning station if the heads can be rinsed under water? Competition. Braun provides one now... and with the scented alcohol solution, the shaver seems "fresher" after the cleansing bath. So, Norelco had to keep up. But in reality it's overkill; don't bother with one if you're thrifty. Rinsing the heads under water works very well.

Essentially, here's the difference: The 1050 has only 1 indicator for battery recharge needed, the 1060 has several LED indicators showing how much charge is left, and the 1090 has an LED double-digit display showing how many minutes of shaving are left. Quite frankly, the 1050 is just fine. When the battery gets low, you've got about 5 minutes left before the shaver will quit. Even still, for every minute the shaver is plugged in, that is how many minutes of shaving you get. Plug the shaver back in for 5 minutes, and you're ready to go for your shave. So... although this "early warning system" looks cool, it's overkill.

So, onto the shaver...

Appearance and Design

=======================

Out of the box, it is a beautiful looking device. Very futuristic. Adorned in several shades of black, dark gray, and silver, with catchy real carbon fiber side panels and a matte rubber finish along the backside for good grip. The three silver shaving discs contrast the black theme nicely. The shaver is lightweight and the heads have a lot of flex to them. The shaver comes with a charging base that serves as a resting stand, which secures the razor magnetically--very tasteful. There is also a "travel pod" included that allows you to charge the shaver while it is housed inside it. Certainly, the accessories are more impressive than what Braun offers. It looked to me like Braun has met its match.

Then, onto the shave.

The Shaving Experience

========================

This Arcitec 1050 is rather quiet, compared to my Braun 8595 Activator. I watched a couple of YouTube posted reviews of the latest Braun Pulsonic 9595, and that shaver sounded about as loud (if not louder) than my Braun 8595 Activator. So... Norelco certainly wins the prize for most quiet shaver. Actually, the sound is a low drone... it gives the impression that the shaver is a slow, antiquated device. The Braun sounds Bold and Busy with its Bounding Buzz. But in reality, the Norelco is formidable.

So, I touch the shaver to my face. I hear and feel the nibble of whiskers taking place. I begin to go through the motions... cheeks, chin, lip areas, then the neck. It feels comfortable. The discs are gentle. I don't feel anything like the reports of "heavy tugging" at the whiskers. I make a full double-pass across my face, then check the smoothness with my free hand.

Eh... not enough. Still rough. No immediate advantage over the Braun. So, I make another few passes. I pinch and pull at my skin as I would with the Braun. I do two more passes and check the smoothness again.

Eh... not enough. Better, but not as close as the Braun. I continue... I probably ended up shaving about 2-3 minutes longer than with the Braun. I found that after using the shaver for a couple of weeks and getting used to how it works, I'm able to match the Braun in closeness. It just takes a little longer. But the trimmer on the Arcitec? Awful. There's this little ridge on the backside of the shaver. A side switch partially extends and activates it, a small bank of cutting teeth. It's hard to get a nice smooth line. When you encounter a hair with it, there's a rather loud "click" sound. The Braun's trimmer is about twice as wide and zaps the hairs effortlessly. Although the Braun is a louder shaver, the trimmer does not introduce much added noise.

I do notice something else rather positive, though: no whisker dust on my clothes. The Norelco captures the whisker debris inside the heads and keeps it there, unlike the Braun which will dump a bunch of it on you if you turn it sideways or on a downward angle. For people who like to shave after they've gotten dressed, that's good news for Norelco.

Parts Replacement

===================

Norelco recommends replacing the heads every 12 months. Braun recommends doing so every 18 months. The Braun Pulsonic series tells you when head replacement is necessary... not sure how this is done (number of shaves?). The Norelco Arcitec has a little "head replacement" indicator. The Norelco replacement heads are about 30% more expensive than Braun's Series 5, and 8000 series, although the new "cassette" system with the Pulsonic is about the same. So, cost of maintenance might be higher. Also, I've seen mixed opinions about how long they last. Some people have complained having to replace them at 6 months, while an acquaintance says he replaces the heads every 10 years--when he changes shavers! He was once told that the heads are "self sharpening". That sounds a bit unrealistic to me. In any case, I can't report the replacement time here just yet... I'll need to use this shaver for a while. But I'll have to give it to Braun for a longer time between head replacement and at a cheaper cost (because it is also said that you can get away with replacing just the cutter block, if the foil is still intact, which drops the cost by 50%... can't do this with the Norelco).

Conclusion

============

So, the conclusion? The Braun is better overall, but by a slight margin. The Norelco Arcitec 1050 puts up a very good fight. I really could use this razor in place of the Braun, day in and day out. Especially if the girlfriend is still asleep and I want to be super quiet. That's what impresses me the most about the Norelco--it is very quiet. And it is great about trapping the whisker debris (I shave before I get dressed, so it's not a critical factor in my case).

Which shaver do I prefer? Well, at the moment it's the Braun. It may be louder, but it has a nice weight to it and is easier to grip. It also achieves a very close shave in less time than the Norelco. I'm planning to keep both... and will alternate between them from time to time. If I need to shave and make minimal noise, the Norelco will be my choice. For travel, I prefer the sturdier Braun. The Norelco looks better on the bathroom counter, no doubt about it.

One other note: If you are concerned about the cost, do not bother with the cleaning station. In reality, it is overkill. These shavers clean quite easily under running water. Norelco introduced the cleaning station because Braun introduced it about 9 years ago, and marketing research discovered that this was a selling factor. Norelco had to "keep up"... but in reality, it isn't required. Save your money!

I have been shaving with Norelco for over 15 years, and I have always loved it, but recently and due to malfunction of my norelco I decided to try the braun 8575, and it was a nightmare, shaving time quadrupled with very poor result, I gave the shaver enough time (3 months) then had to return and get this one. I appreciate norelco shavers, this one is really great compared to all I used before, shaving time about 3 min. the jet clean system however is not very effective, it does clean but the solution is alcohol free so it does not disinfect. additionally you still have to manually rinse the shaver before placing it in the cleaning system as cleaning system alone does not do the job!

"Works perfect for me, but not perfect for everyone." 2009-10-11

I love shaving in the shower. This shaver works great for that purpose. I don't use the propriety Nivea shaving moisturizer; I just use a small dollop of Nivea's regular shaving gel ($3 for a large canister available anywhere) and that works fine. It is a little slower than my old Norelco Advantage in that it requires several passes over an area to get a nice shave. The flexible head design is amazing; it can really get that stubborn neck hair that my old shaver used to miss. The open design makes it not that great for dry shaving as the hair gets everywhere, but I use it 98% of the time in the shower that that is not a big issue for me.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is due to it's charging mechanism. Charging the shaver in 4 hours sounds like a good idea, but the manual strictly admonishes against overcharging. Hence, it is actually a bit of a pain. If I bought the low-end shaver that charges in 8 hours, I'd charge it in the morning and it would be ready when I get home from work. If I bought the high-end shaver that charges in 2 hours, I can plug it in whenever I feel like and unplug it 2 hours later. A 4 hour charging time requires a larger block of time for me to have to remember to charge the thing. Why couldn't Norelco make a charger that automatically shuts off or goes to trickle charge when the battery is full? Also, why the need for a base? It takes up counter space in my bathroom and is bulky for traveling. My old shaver did not have a base and was great for travel as the AC adapter plugged directly into the razor.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably buy the 8020x and save myself $25.

I have owned and used an early model of this razor, known as the Norelco Advantage for perhaps eight or so years. This has been, and still remains, a great razor if used properly. During my ownership of the Norelco Advantage razor I have had only one maintenance action, and that was the replacement of the battery about three years ago at a cost of about $43.

About a week ago I accidentally knocked this older razor off its base and, unfortunately, the razor ended up on the bathroom tile floor. It still works as well as ever, however, but the razor is now quite hard to close to its proper operating position so I opted to buy the new model 8040X since, after all, the older model had really worked for me over a long period of time, and maybe the newer model would have some worthwhile advantages.

What I have observed, however, is that the new model has no advantages, but one significant disadvantage. The new model must be left on charge no more that four hours to prevent battery damage, whereas I could leave the old model on charge all day, which provided me with about two weeks of shaving before the next required charge. The old model could also run about a week with only a one hour charge. I have also noted that Norelco now supplies a flimsy plastic construction of the razor, whereas the older razor was much more rugged, a not surprising evolution of articles of this kind.

One other point which pertains to both the old and the new model -- there is no need to use the Nivea shaving lotion supplied by Norelco. On the contrary, the need to push an additional button during shaving is actually distracting, at least for me. My shaving procedure is, after taking a shower, to first wash my face thoroughly with liquid soap and hot water, leaving the soap lather on my face. I then apply a moderate amount of skin lotion (I use Dermalube, but most skin lotions will do) over my face evenly, and then proceed to shave without using any Nivea lotion. I find this procedure to be both superior and much less expensive than using the Nivea lotion.

In summary, the new model 8040X provides the same comfortable wet shave experience as the older model, but don't look for any improvements.

This was my first electric razor in 40 years. I always shave in the shower so wanted something that would work in an aquatic environment. My first few shaves were okay, not terrific, even using the moisturizer provided. I soon learned that I could get a really close shave [and a faster one] simply by using more pressure. I have a low pain threshold and it did not hurt to do this. You don't need any moisturizer at all but if you insist, any gel like Gillette's Edge works just fine. It is a tad slower than shaving with a blade but I can virtually guarantee you won't have a nick. I don't even get red skin. You can wash the heads in the shower and store the razor there for a week of shaves, then recharge in a few hours. Pretty slick product IMHO.

Very satisified with first few uses of this shaver. Gives shave that is very close to a razor even without the Nivea lotion. Also does well after not shaving for several days. Found that I can get a good shave without the Nivea lotion by just wetting my face with water or a soapy solution.

Philips Norelco advises to give the shaver thirty days for one's face to get used to it. Do find some minor irritation which goes away quickly, no worse than shaving with a blade. Philips claims this will go away after a month and if not, they will refund the purchase within fourty five days. This says alot about their customer satisfaction.

Only problem I have with shaver is that I accidentally hit the button to dispense the Nivea lotion when shaving when I do not want it. Solution to this is not to refill the lotion resovoir after depleting first fill.

This shaver is a 3 head rotary. You can use it in the shower or outside the shower using a rinse in the faucet. There is a bladder that contains Nivea moisturizing lotion which make the shaver work extra nice. No razor burn! The shaver has enough capacity for maybe 4 uses and the shaver is easily refilled.

Two lessons learner...

Nivea moisturizer is a little hard to find. I get mine at Walmart.

Don't go more than 2 days without using it. Extra growth will hinder it. You then need to use the clipper attachment (this is provided) to trim it down..

Battery life is very good and the recharger stand is easy. Just drop it in.

The rotary heads can be replaced with fresh blades at a later date. Haven't needed it but it will be handy.

In all a well spent pile of money. I use it in the shower every day and love it. No more razor burn.

I received conformation that the product shipped on October 14 from a facility that is 45 mins away. An update: To be fair I might have over-reacted in my judgement of this product. I decided to try one more thing and I ordered a set of new blades. That improved the razor dramatically. The old blades must have dulled eventhough I didn't use the razor all that much. Now it is giving me a decent shave and it does it quickly. Still, not quite as good as the old model but much closer. My 2 star rating should be changed to 4 stars (Amazon doesn't seem to let me do this).

Previous review:

I own the previous model of this razor and bought the new model because I travel a lot. I loved using the older model in the shower. While it is heavier than the new model it gave me a good, close shave and the battery charge lasted about a month.

I am disapponted in the new model because it simply does not give a close shave. I still use the older model and there is no comparison in the shave I get from the new model especially if I miss a day shaving. I might be doing something wrong, but it seems the new model doesn't cut my beard nearly as well as the 3 year old model I have.

I like that it is lighter than the old model, but the battery charge doesn't last as long. And while I thought it was a great idea that you can pump in the Nivea cream, I actually find the packets more convenient. I can have a bunch hanging in the shower and replace a spent one very easily. Not so with the can.

This is absolutely the best electric shaver I have ever owned. It gives the closeness of a razor with the convenience of a cordless electric shaver. The battery life is excellent and the included stand keeps the battery and the cream topped up.

The use of the shaving foam is absolutely required. As other reviewers have pointed out, the razor heads are not encased, so if you shave without the foam, the cut hair bits will be all over the place. The foam keeps the cut hair stuck inside the open razor head. After finishing shaving, just put the running shaver under the tap, which rinses out all the accumulated gunk and you are ready for the next use.

I have gone through 3 cans of cream in my 1 year of ownership, which I feel is reasonable.

i have always been a disposable razor guy. i tried an electric/rotary shaver back in the late 1980's and didnt care for it much - i cant remember the brand. i bought this norelco a couple of months ago and decided to give electric shavers another try because of the rediculus prices of replacement blades these days. this shaver performed flawlessly. it is extremely comfortable to use and gives you a close shave. this shaver is extremely quiet. the cleaning station does a very good job. excellent product that i recommend to you guys thinking of switching to an electric shaver.

I purchased this shaver to replace a Braun 360 complete that was less than a year old.

The Norelco gives a good clean, close shave. The reason I did not give this unit five stars is the cleaning system. With the Braun when the unit was cleaned it was also dried. With the Norelco, the unit is clean but you have to let (wait)for the unit dry before using. I usually clean at night and leave it on the counter to dry overnight. Also, the fluid MUST be full for the cleaning to begin, so each time I have to add more liquid to an almost full bowl.

The shaver itself is great. I like the shave. I have not had to replace the blades yet.

I read the pro and con comments on the Norelco Arcitec 1050 and made the purchase....nothing but positive returns here. Someone said it's noisy....not so compared to my old Braun 7550 which I was buying blades for every couple of months..and I do not have a heavy beard. The Norelco gives me a close shave...with my Braun I used to have to use a hand razor for my neck. And whoever complained about the cleaning of the Norelco needs a butler.....you pop open the 3 rotary blades, run under the sink for 10 seconds, hitting each blade and it's perfectly clean for the next use. I got about 30 days worth of shaving before having to recharge. Bottom line here, totally happy with this product.

Received this shaver as a present last year. The booklet says that the head should last six months; it doesn't. I still have several older Norelco models for comparison, one in my travel case, and one in my RV. The older two, overall work better. The new Norelco is lighter than the others which seems to require pressing harder with it to get a closer shave. The built-in trimmer is small and effective. For this old guy it even works on eyebrows and nosehair (I know, gross!).

Pros:

Sleeker, more style.

Trimmer works well.

The complete head is changed for a new, one piece, bladed head; takes seconds to change.

Cons:

Expensive, by comparison with other models currently available.

Doesn't shave as close unless one presses very hard and shaves longer. Takes longer to get a good, close shave.

Charger doesn't fit in travel case.

Replacement heads do not last the stated six months; three months is more like it, and they are pricey.

Still a fan of Norelco, but not the newest model of this type.

I have been using Norelco shavers for 20 to 30 years and this is the worst one they ever made. Initially it shaved OK but within 6 months the quality of the shave deteriorated to useless. I contacted customer service and they admitted that they had a problem with the heads. They now include different cleaning instructions (which I did not receive)They would do nothing for me even though they admitted there was a problem with the heads. I am not about to spent [...] on a new head that may only last another 6 months. Sorry Norelco, but you have lost a loyal customer forever.

I've used the Norelco rotating blade shavers for almost 2 decades now. I just bought the Arcitec 1050 at double the money of my previous Norelco that still works, but the battery is holding less of a charge now so I thought more money might be better.

I've had the Arcitec for 2 weeks and it is just average and not worth the money. Nothing about it is better than my 5 years ago Norelco, last one I bought. And one thing is definitely worse. I use the clippers on my old Norelco to trim sideburns, mustache, and ears. This new thing must have been designed by a woman. The clipper will protrude very slightly from the body and you cannot use it easily or effectively because the shaving head are in the way. It is really lame.

I'm returning it and getting the old style for half the price that I have been very happy with.

I bought this low cost shaver for my summer cottage and use it sparingly. I only used it 4 times but each time the shave was clean and quick. In fact I used it two days in a row with a short beard growth and used it after not shaving for three days with a much longer beard growth and in each instance the Norelco did a great job. I use a braun 8990 on a daily basis so I'm familiar with shaving with an electric razor and the Norelco has done the job for me.

I had a Remington Titanium rotary razor that served me well for several years,

but it began to grab my skin regularly. I thought I would try the Norelco

since a) I think they invented the rotary razor, and b) I found a good price on Amazon.

I'm sixty-four and have been using Norelco shavers all of my adult life. When I needed a new one, my wife wanted to get it for my birthday. I specified a Norelco Arcitec, mostly because its looks made it look light and handy, and I anticipated that I would get my usual Norelco shave.

WRONG! From day one, I had to check to be sure there were blades in this thing. It's like a kid's toy shaver--it buzzes and runs around over the stubble, but gets very little of it after several passes. I kid you not, I can go over the same spot 6-8 times and then test it with my finger tips and not notice any change. I generally shave during a one-hour commute. With the Arcitec, it takes me a half-hour to get the job done--and poorly! The Arcitec has a tiny capacity to hold shavings and when it fills up (half way through one shave) it shaves even worse. If you skip shaving for even one day, the Arcitec is essentially useless.

I have a really OLD Norelco shaver that I bought at an estate sale as a backup. This this was OLD when I bought it twenty years ago. The previous owner used it to shave her legs. It's so old that I can't entirely read the model number, but it looks like it might be "SC7800." It looks like a style from the 1940s. I have no idea how old the blades are in this thing but it shaves circles around my Arcitec. I now use it instead.

I too was expecting a first class shave with this new model. Instead it seems to skim over my beard growth cutting only a small irregular swath. I've used Norelco rotary electrics for over 35 years and instead of this model being the best it is one of the worst.

Specifically, my gripes center around shaving performance. Longer hairs escape the slots in the heads, and the longer the hairs become the harder it is for this razor to cut them. I wear glasses these days and am not used to having to wear them to shave. Also, some of my beard hairs have lost their oroginal coloring. Imagine the surprise when I put on my glasses and see those few random quarter inch plus long white hairs I've been sporting for the last week or so. Impressive.

The side burn trimmer is practically useless. It is both too narrow and does not extend out far enough. Cutting performance is unacceptable. Both these deficiencies are probably the result of a designers effort at making the "package" attractive, but done at the expense of function.

Save your money and pay half as much for one of Norelco's more traditional models.

Exact replacement for my Norelco razor, but somehow I do not feel the same smoothness of my shave as the blades that came originally with the razor.

On a scale of 1-10 the replacement blades were 8 in comparison.

Don't know if there is a manufacturing lot difference betweem OEM and replacement spares. Otherwise good value for money though I must say they are expensive, but this is how manufacturers make money.... make the product lower cost them make the money on the spares to keep it going.

I ordered the HQ5 blades for my almost 10 year old Norelco 5814 shaver for the $26.99 + free shipping and they were on my doorstep on the 9th day (which was to be expected & actually 1 day before the expected delivery date) after the order was placed. It was kind of a joke how easy it was to swap out the old blades with the new ones. It took more time cleaning the shaver before installing the new blades which was pretty simple and took all of 20-30 seconds. I kept thinking this is too easy and really thought I must be missing something. Works great now. For all looking for replacement rotary blades, this was the cheapest $$ I found. Even directly thru the internet with Norelco it was $32.99 + $3.50 shipping and since I live in CA there would have been 8.75% state sales tax added. Even other sites had it for $25.00 + around $5.00 shipping so I thought this was the best deal and personally never have had problems with all of my other Amazon orders. Bottom line, it sure beats going out and buying a new shaver for $60-80 when the old ones works just fine. 4 stars just because it was for an old shaver.

I ordered a set of three replacement blades. I have been doing this with Norelco razors for years. The ones I got were in what appeared to be a correct box, but were in an unmarked plastic holder inside. When installed, they made a racket. Then I could see that the metal sleeve for each blade was perfectly round, not at all like the original sleeves which had tiny, sharp metal extensions to hold them in place. So I asked for an exchange, which came quickly. The exchange set was exactly like the first and made the same racket. I sent it back for a refund. I don't care what the box says, I did NOT get the correct blades. Someone has packaged the wrong blades in the HQ5 box. I will order elsewhere.

Followup: Now I have found the problem. The Norelco razor I had ordered a year ago from Amazon came with the wrong info booklet. It called for the HQ5 blades I ordered as a replacement. The real number on the razor was worn down so far as to make it almost unreadable. When I finally saw the correct number, I ordered the correct HQ9 blades.

No wonder the ones I first received wouldn't fit properly.

To begin with I read the instructions. I charged the battery for 10 hours before using and it has run flawlessly for a month without a recharge. You can't just leave this plugged in all the time. Basically, run the battery down and recharge for 10 hours.

The trimmer is light and feels good in my hand. The attachments snap in and out easily and they are washable. The blades are sharp and do not require oiling.

For years I used Wahl trimmers. In fact, I bought one again but when I got it home it didn't work right so I decided to give this one a try. Frankly, there is no comparison. This Norelco is really that much better than any of the Wahl's I've owned over the years.

I bought this shaver as a replacement for my old one, since day 1 I am very happy with this purchase.

Battery life is good, the shaving it's almost as close as with a razor, is not as noisy as my old one.

Two weeks ago I was in my university final exams, so shaving was no a priority and I let my facial hair grow for a week, when i finally had some time for shaving, I was expecting a lot of pain caused by the pulled hair, but it wasn't so... this is the best shaver I've ever had!!

Pro: Light weight, quiet, easy to clean.

Con: Poor shave, increased time shave to remove stubble, skin irritation, poor battery life, no storage case, poor packaging design.

Recommendation: Poor, do not buy.

Summary:

The Philips Norelco 7340 Men's Shaving System was purchased during a Lightning Deal. Price was about $38. Looked like a good purchase at very good price. Years ago, I had owned a Norelco shaver and had been satisfied by the shave. The new 7340 did not perform as well as my old Norelco. Although my face is angular I thought the newer head design would lead to a closer shave and less stubble, this was not the case. I also spent considerable time going back over face and neck areas that left my face very irritated. Battery life was also a problem, I only received about half as many shaves as advertised before shaver simply stopped. Probably due to more shave time needed to remove stubble.

All in all a disappointing purchase, I have gone back to Gillette M3 blade shave thus gaining better shave, far less irritation, return of lost time.

I had another Norelco razor which I was satisfied with, but it was 10 years old, time for a new one. I thought I would spend more and get a better product. This razor is quieter but it takes longer to get a good shave. I think they slow the motor down to make it quieter. One feature I like is the charge indicator light which blinks when the razor is charged.

I am satisfied with the product, but do not think it is worth the extra cost, the basic model would probably do just fine.

I have depended on an electric shaver for about 30 years and have used mid-range price models from Phillips, Remington and Braun, including both rotary and mesh screen models. After three weeks of use, the Norelco 7340 has provided the closest, cleanest shave I have ever had. The shaver is very quiet and may give the impression of being underpowered but the shave is excellent. It fits in my hand very well and is easy to clean. The first charge lasted two weeks. It doesn't come in a case but that is not a problem for me. Overall I am delighted with the quality and value of the product.

Have owned the Norelco RQ10 razor for over a year now and very pleased with performance/quality/maintenance. My main problem is cost for replacement blades which are, I feel, expensive since they probably should be replaced every 8 - 10 months for max. performance. The most economical answer would be to replace just the circular blades and combs, not the whole head which seems to hold up fine. Ability to remove old blades and trying to get actual mfg. new blades (not knock-offs or used items) via online would be the big problems, any suggestions?

My first impression was. because it was so quiet, I thought the battery needed charging, as it sounded like my old Norelco when it's battery was run down. However, the new razor was doing a great job cutting, where the old one wouldn't when needing charging.

Because it is so quiet, I still don't know how to tell when charging is required. I am sure I will learn this soon! Great cutting razor!

I like the quietness and lightness of the unit. Actually, both surprised me when I took it out of the box and used it for the first time. I have never been able to get as close a shave with an electric razor as I have been getting with the 8240. Frankly, I did not think it was possible. That was a nice surprise. On the downside there is no way of knowing when the battery is getting low and you are encouraged not to recharge until it is low in power. About two weeks after I started using it and without warning it stopped which meant I was out of power. I wish I had known it was coming. The company recommends 17 days between charges but how do you keep track of such a detail when there are so many other details one needs to track that seem much more important than thinking about the razor battery. Otherwise I like the unit and pleased that I bought it.

The Norelco 8240XL is probably the best shaver I have ever purchased. It cuts close without any irritation to the skin and is so quiet you hardly realize it is running. Another bonus feature is that when you open the compartment with the blades, you can wash the heads without taking them out of the razor. Finally someone was thinking about the customer when they created this shaver! It is great right out of the box.

I purchased this shaver to replace my Norelco 950RX that I purchased 20 years ago. My old razer was on its second set of batteries and they wouldn't hold a charge. Instead of repairing them again I decided to purchase a new one. Compared to the 950RX, the 8240XL is much lighter and quieter. Being lighter has taken some getting used to. The 950RX had a battery charge indicator and a closeness adjustment whereas the 8240XL has neither which is not a huge issue. The new shaver gives a good close shave and since the initial charge I haven't had to recharge and its been over a month! I am satisfied with my purchase.
